Send a Free Fax to a Doctor's Office

When a doctor's office asks for a form, a records release or a referral by fax, you can send it free from a phone or a computer. Every FaxTerra account gets 10 free pages a month, with no credit card.

Send a fax free

10 pages free every month. No credit card.

Get the fax number from the office

Use the fax number printed on the form or the letter the office gave you. If there is none, call the front desk and ask them to read the fax number back to you. A number from a search result or a directory can belong to a different department or a different office. For hospital systems, labs and insurers, the medical records guide lists the fax numbers each one publishes on its own site.

What to put on the cover page

Add a cover page with your name, a phone number the office can call, and what the pages are, such as a records release or the form they asked for. If you are sending for someone else, put the patient's name on it too. The cover page counts as one page.

What it costs

A form of up to 10 pages, cover page included, sends free within the month's free pages. A longer packet, such as records with several pages of results, uses a credit pack, from $1.99 for 10 pages, paid once. Credits never expire. See free faxing.

If the office needs to fax you back

Free sends go out from a shared FaxTerra number, and a fax sent back to that number cannot reach you. If the office will fax you results or a signed form, send from a number of your own. A one-time fax number is $14.99 once for 90 days, and a plan with a number starts at $4.99 a month. See receiving faxes online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the office know the fax is from me?

Only from what is on the pages. A free fax goes out from a shared FaxTerra number, so the office's machine shows that number, not yours. Put your name and phone number on the cover page.

How do I know the office received it?

An email arrives when the office's fax machine accepts the fax, and the status page follows it while it sends. The delivery confirmation records the fax number, the time it was delivered and the page count, a record that the office's machine took every page.

Are my medical documents kept private?

Your documents are encrypted while they travel to FaxTerra and while they are stored. A sent document is kept 30 days on the free plan, and you can delete a sent fax from your history at any time. For what HIPAA covers when a patient sends their own records, see the medical records guide.

Can I fax a photo of a form?

Yes. A phone photo of a paper page faxes well. Lay the page flat in good light and fill the frame with it, and check in the preview that every line is readable before you send.
