Bring your fax number to FaxTerra

A fax number is not something you pick once and forget. It goes on referral pads and intake forms, into a state licence record, onto the invoices you have already sent, and into directory listings you have no way to recall. That is why switching fax providers is a decision most people make once and then live with: the service can be worse than what you would choose today, but the number is the part that would cost you to change. You can now bring the number instead. Transfers are open on every paid plan, and the check that tells you whether your number will move is open before you pay for anything.

Who it's for: Anyone whose fax number is already printed on forms, invoices, business cards, or a directory listing, and who would rather not reprint all of it.

1

Find out before you pay

The question worth answering first is whether your number can move at all, and you do not need a plan to answer it. Sign in on any plan, including the free one, open your fax numbers page, and choose Port an existing number. Enter the number, say who provides it today, and the check answers in seconds.

It creates no order and commits you to nothing. If your number is clear to move, you will see so before you have spent anything. If your current provider is one that holds on to the numbers it issues, you will see that too, along with the option to take a FaxTerra number instead, which is live in seconds.

2

Free on every paid plan

There is no transfer fee, on the way in or on the way out. A number you bring in occupies a line on your plan the way a number you picked would, and every paid plan includes one, so if your line is still empty the transfer costs nothing beyond the plan itself. If it is already in use, the wizard offers a paid extra line at $3.99 a month and states the cost before you agree.

Transfers cover US and Canada local numbers, and are available on all three subscription plans and all three Healthcare tiers.

3

Your old service keeps working

Your current provider drives the schedule, so a transfer takes from about a business day to a few weeks depending on who holds the number. Your existing fax service runs the whole time: the number stops answering at your old provider at the moment it starts answering at FaxTerra, so there is no window where faxes to it go nowhere.

The wizard walks through five steps and saves as you go. You give the account details your current provider holds on file, upload a recent bill, sign a Letter of Authorization, and choose when you would like the number to move. After that a status page tracks the transfer and we email you at each change. If your provider asks for a correction, that page names the field to fix so you can resubmit without starting over.

4

The number stays yours

A number you brought in is yours after you stop paying us too. If your plan ends, it is not released the way a FaxTerra-assigned number is: it is held for 60 days so you can move it to another provider, and we never charge a fee to let it go. Even past that window nothing releases it on a timer; a person reviews it first.

This is where fax providers differ most. Some treat a number they issued you as theirs to keep, and will refuse to release it or charge a fee to consider it. At FaxTerra, moving a number out is free and you ask your new provider to start it, the same way you would start a transfer in.
