Accredo says what its patient fax is for

Most specialty pharmacies publish a fax number and leave you to guess what it handles. Accredo does the opposite. Its contact page gives a General Patient Fax at (877) 329-4605 and then lists the only four things to use it for: Referrals, prior authorizations, clinical notes, responses to Accredo forms sent to the patient.

That list is the useful part. A document outside it, such as a request for your dispensing records or a billing dispute, goes to a team that handles something else and takes longer for it. Patients located in Hawaii are told to use Hawaii contacts instead, including a separate patient fax at (808) 650-6487.

Accredo dispenses medications for cancer, bleeding disorders, hereditary angioedema, immune deficiency, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and publishes a condition-specific phone line for each. When a document belongs to one of those programs, calling that line first tends to route it faster than any fax.

A prescription has to come from your prescriber

The fax number that starts or renews a prescription is (888) 302-1028, and Accredo directs it at prescribers. Its renewal instructions ask the prescriber’s office to complete the renewal form, sign it, and fax it. Its patient FAQ says the same thing from the other side: when you are out of refills, your doctor can fax a new prescription to that number.

So the practical move is to give the number to your doctor’s office rather than to fax a photographed prescription yourself. Accredo also supports electronic renewal through the prescriber’s own records system, which skips fax entirely when the practice has it turned on.

Schedule II controlled substances cannot be faxed by anyone, prescriber included. That is a federal rule rather than an Accredo policy.

Verify the number before you send

A prior authorization packet carries your name, date of birth, diagnosis codes, and clinical notes. Confirm where it is going:

• Read the fax number off the Accredo form in front of you. Individual therapy referral forms carry their own line, and the number on the form beats any general number.
• If you are in Hawaii, use the Hawaii patient fax rather than the national one.
• Payment and billing questions have their own phone line and a St. Louis mailing address, not a fax.
• Do not use a number from a third-party directory. Accredo publishes these itself on accredo.com, and the published version is the one to trust.
