Can You Keep Your eFax Number When You Cancel?

It depends on where the number came from. A number you brought to eFax can usually move, and a number eFax assigned you usually cannot, because eFax’s customer agreement restricts it. Either way, the order you do things in decides what you keep.

A free live lookup on the number takes seconds and needs no account. It creates no order and commits you to nothing.

What eFax’s terms say

These are eFax’s own terms, from the eFax Customer Agreement effective April 2, 2026, published on eFax’s legal notices page. The agreement names eFax the customer of record of the numbers it provides, and it splits numbers into two groups:

  • A number eFax assigned you. “All Fax Numbers provided to You by the Company (other than a Ported Fax Number) will remain the exclusive property of the Company and will not be ported to You.”
  • A number you brought to eFax. The agreement allows a port out when you terminate, on four conditions listed below.

The agreement also says eFax is not a telephone carrier and is under no legal obligation to let you port a number it provided. That is eFax’s stated position. Run the check on this page before you cancel or pay anyone, since it looks up the number itself.

If you brought the number to eFax

Start the transfer with your new provider while the eFax account is active. eFax says that to keep service during a port you must “not terminate Your account until the port is complete”. Its conditions for the port are:

  • Written notice to eFax no later than thirty (30) days after termination
  • A signed porting request from your new carrier within the same window
  • Payment for all services up to your notice
  • An administrative fee of $40 per number, received within the window

eFax adds that technical difficulties may prevent a port and that the fee is not refunded if they do. Moving a US or Canada local number into FaxTerra is free on every paid plan, and switching fax providers sets out the full order of steps.

If eFax assigned the number

Plan on a new number, and keep eFax running while you change over. eFax’s agreement says that after termination an assigned number “may be immediately re-assigned to another customer”, so a sender using the old number could reach a stranger.

  1. Get a new fax number while eFax still answers.
  2. Put the new number on your forms, letterhead and website, and tell anyone who faxes you regularly.
  3. Keep eFax open until the faxes stop arriving at the old number.
  4. Save your stored faxes, then cancel.

The agreement says eFax “retains the right to reclaim the number(s)” if they are ported out against its requirements, and to collect liquidated damages, so read it before you try to move an assigned number anyway.

How to cancel eFax

eFax’s “How to Cancel Your eFax Account” page lists four online steps:

  1. Log into your account.
  2. Go to Billing.
  3. Select cancellation option.
  4. Look for the email confirming your cancellation.

Some accounts have to ask. With multiple fax numbers, an outstanding balance or an annual plan, eFax says to contact it by chat, email or (323) 817-3207. An eFax Corporate account calls (888) 226-3466. An account bought through iTunes cancels with Apple.

eFax says your account is closed at the end of your current billing cycle, and that afterwards you will no longer have access to your documents. Download what you need first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my eFax number back after I cancel?

Not reliably. You can resubscribe, but eFax says it can’t guarantee your previous fax number will be available, because it may be reassigned to other customers.

How do I know whether eFax assigned my number?

Look at where it came from. If you got the number when you signed up, eFax assigned it. If you had the number first and moved it to eFax, it is a ported number. Your signup records or eFax support can confirm which.

Can I pause my eFax account while I switch?

No. eFax says “you cannot suspend your account temporarily”. Keep it active until the switch is finished, then cancel.

Don’t FCC rules let me keep my number?

Not necessarily. The FCC’s porting guide says an old company “cannot refuse to port your number” once you request service from a new one, for moves between wireline, IP and wireless providers. eFax’s agreement says eFax is not a telephone carrier and has no legal obligation to let you port a number it provided. How the two fit together for your number is a legal question we cannot answer for you.

Do MyFax and MetroFax work the same way?

We treat them the same way. They are sold alongside eFax, and we treat a number either one assigned as restricted until a transfer proves otherwise. Their own terms are separate documents, so read the one you signed.

What does a new FaxTerra number cost?
