Which Capital One fax line you need

All three published numbers belong to Capital One Bank, the checking and savings side of the business.

Banking forms and general correspondence go to (877) 650-3528, the number on the Capital One banking forms page. Beneficiary designations and the bank power of attorney forms listed there are submitted this way, with the cover sheet addressed Attn: CORR.

A name change on a checking or savings account goes to (888) 464-3220 with the document that proves it and a government ID.

Tax certification forms, W-9 and W-8BEN, go to (877) 806-4430.

The other Capital One businesses publish no fax number on the pages we can read. Credit card disputes are mail only: Attn Disputes, P.O. Box 30279, Salt Lake City, UT 84130-0279. Estate documents for a deceased customer go to Attn Bank by Mail, P.O. Box 85123, Richmond, VA 23285. Capital One Auto Finance says some states accept a faxed power of attorney for a title transfer but publishes no number to send it to; call the number on your statement and ask them to give you one. Discover is now a Capital One division, but its published fax lines are still Discover's own.

A number for Capital One Auto Finance circulates on contact-aggregator sites. It appears on no capitalone.com page, so this guide does not carry it.

What customers send to these lines

The documents that go by fax are the ones that need a signature and a piece of identification attached:

• A marriage certificate, divorce decree or court order plus a driver license or passport, for a name change
• A completed W-9 or W-8BEN after a backup-withholding notice
• A beneficiary designation or a bank power of attorney form from the Capital One forms page
• Documents a Capital One representative asked you to send in writing

These are short. Two to four pages covers most of them, which is inside the free monthly pages on any account.

These lines take documents in, not out

All three are intake queues. Capital One works the document and follows up in the app, by secure message, or by mail. Nothing returns by fax and there is no receipt from Capital One when the pages land.

Verify the number before you send

• Use the number on the Capital One help-center page for your specific task, or on the form you downloaded. Each of the three lines is task-specific.
• Do not send card or auto paperwork to a bank fax. Capital One runs those as separate businesses with separate mailrooms, and a document in the wrong queue is a document nobody is expecting.
• Never fax wire instructions or full online banking credentials. Capital One asks for neither by fax, and an unexpected instruction to change where money goes is the standard shape of a wire fraud attempt.
• Ignore fax numbers from contact-aggregator sites. Capital One publishes its own on capitalone.com, and those are the ones to trust.
