Which Schwab line you need

Schwab’s contact page lists no fax number at all. The number people are looking for lives on the forms themselves: (888) 526-7252 appears in the return-instructions block of Schwab’s retail forms, which is why the right phrase is “the number printed on Schwab’s forms” rather than “Schwab’s customer-service fax.”

Schwab Bank is separate. Written inquiries and error disputes about a Schwab Bank Visa debit card go to (877) 524-3067, published in the bank’s own disclosure. Sending a brokerage form there, or a debit dispute to the brokerage line, puts your paperwork in a queue that cannot act on it.

What people fax to Schwab

The forms that name fax in their return instructions are the ones that need a signature:

• Schwab One brokerage application and Inherited IRA application
• Check request forms, for an IRA or a taxable account
• Third-party and internal Schwab-to-Schwab transfer forms
• Checkwriting and debit card applications
• Letters of instruction, name changes and address changes
• Transfer Your Account to Schwab, the ACATS form, when your copy names a fax destination
