MOHELA Fax Numbers

MOHELA publishes its fax numbers by loan program, so the line you need depends on whether your loans are Direct or FFEL. Send your form free from a phone or computer.

Direct Loans and FFEL loans use different lines

MOHELA’s contact page splits its fax numbers by loan program, and picking the wrong one is the common mistake.

(866) 222-7060 is the toll-free fax for Direct Loan servicing. If your loans came from the federal Direct Loan program, which is nearly everyone who borrowed after 2010, that is your line. (636) 787-4038 is the international fax MOHELA publishes for the same Direct Loan servicing, for borrowers sending from outside the US.

(888) 212-5912 is for Federal Family Education Loan Program and CASH loans. FFEL loans were made by banks under federal guarantee, and if yours are FFEL, your correspondence goes to that separate line.

Check which program your loans belong to on StudentAid.gov before you send, since the loan type also decides which repayment and forgiveness programs you qualify for. Third-party sites circulate other numbers described as MOHELA document lines; they do not appear on the MOHELA’s contact page, so this page does not print them.

What borrowers fax to MOHELA

The forms that still move by fax are the ones that need a signature or an employer signature:

  • The Public Service Loan Forgiveness form, with the employer certification section completed and signed
  • Income-driven repayment plan applications and annual recertification, with income documentation
  • Alternative documentation of income, such as pay stubs, when your tax return does not reflect current earnings
  • Deferment and forbearance requests
  • Total and permanent disability discharge paperwork

A PSLF form with an employer signature is three or four pages. An income-driven repayment application with pay stubs and a tax return often runs ten to twenty, which is where a credit pack or the Starter plan matters. Write your MOHELA account number on every page.

MOHELA does not fax you back

These are intake lines. MOHELA processes what arrives and posts the outcome to your online account or sends a letter, so nothing returns on the fax channel.

Keep the delivery receipt FaxTerra emails you. Forgiveness and repayment programs turn on dates, and the receipt showing the destination number and the time the pages were accepted is the record that your form was submitted when you say it was. Screenshots of a portal upload and a fax receipt serve the same purpose; you want one of them.

Verify the number before you send

A PSLF or income-driven repayment package carries your Social Security number, your employer details, and your income:

  • Read the fax number for your program from the MOHELA’s contact page, matching Direct Loan against FFEL and CASH.
  • Check the form itself. A federal form often prints its own submission instructions, and those outrank a general contact number.
  • Confirm MOHELA still services your loans on StudentAid.gov. Federal servicing assignments move, and a form faxed to a former servicer does not get forwarded.
  • Do not use a number from a student-loan forum or a directory site.

How to fax MOHELA without a fax machine

Create a free FaxTerra account with an email address, upload your form and supporting documents as a PDF or as photos of each page, enter the MOHELA number for your loan program, and send. The delivery receipt arrives by email.

A signed PSLF form sends free within your monthly free pages. A recertification package with income documentation is covered by a one-time credit pack from about 10¢ a page, and the Starter plan ($4.99/month, 50 pages) fits a borrower recertifying and submitting employer certifications through the year. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the MOHELA fax number?

MOHELA publishes (866) 222-7060 as the toll-free fax for Direct Loan servicing, (636) 787-4038 as the international line for the same program, and (888) 212-5912 for FFEL Program and CASH loans.

Where do I fax my PSLF form to MOHELA?

To the Direct Loan fax at (866) 222-7060 if your loans are federal Direct Loans, which is the case for most PSLF applicants. Include every page of the form, with the employer certification signed.

How do I know whether my loans are Direct or FFEL?

Sign in at StudentAid.gov and look at your loan detail, which names the program for each loan. The distinction decides both which MOHELA fax line to use and which repayment and forgiveness programs you qualify for.

Will MOHELA confirm it received my form?

Not by fax. The outcome shows up in your MOHELA account or arrives by letter. Keep your fax delivery receipt as the dated proof of submission.

Is FaxTerra affiliated with MOHELA?

No. FaxTerra is an independent online fax service. We deliver your document to the number you enter and confirm when it arrives. We cannot see your loans or the status of a form.
