Can I fax my ballot?

If you vote from overseas or in the military, your state decides whether it takes a ballot by fax. Our guide has a page for every state.

1

Your state decides

Overseas and military voters return their ballots under their own state's rules, and states differ: some take a voted ballot by fax, some only from certain voters, such as military voters in a hostile fire area, and some take it only by mail.

Our overseas ballot guide has a page for every state, D.C., and territory. Each one quotes the state's own rule, says what has to go in the fax, lists the county ballot fax lines the state publishes with a phone number to call first, and links the official instructions.

2

Call before you send

Election offices change their fax lines, and some lines stop answering. Before you send, call your election office to confirm the ballot fax number. If a line rings and never connects, a retry will not fix it; the office can tell you the right number.

3

What it costs

A ballot is sent like any other fax. Every account gets 10 free pages a month, so a ballot packet of up to 10 pages sends free, from any country, with no fax machine. If a second ballot in the same month takes you past that, a credit pack covers it. See free faxing for how the free pages work.

To receive a blank ballot by fax you need a number of your own; a ballot your state emails you needs none. See receiving faxes.
